Statement on City of Houston's Cooperation with ICE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 12, 2025

Somos Spring Branch Responds to Mayor Whitmire’s Admission of Cooperation with ICE

Somos Spring Branch stands in firm opposition to the City of Houston’s cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), confirmed publicly by Mayor John Whitmire on November 9, 2025. For months, the Mayor denied any collaboration between city agencies and federal immigration authorities. This delayed disclosure undermines public trust and puts thousands of Houston families at risk.

We join our partners in the Dignity Not Deportation Coalition in demanding that the City of Houston protect immigrants by:

  • Ending all existing agreements or informal collaborations between Houston Police Department (HPD) and ICE;

  • Ensuring complete transparency on any data shared or assistance provided to federal immigration enforcement;

  • Dedicating city resources to Know Your Rights trainings and legal representation for immigrants; and

  • Recognizing valid local identification such as the Harris County Enhanced Library Card across all city departments.

Houston’s strength lies in its people - immigrant, Latino, Black, Asian, and white - who work, learn, and raise families side by side. When the city cooperates with ICE, it creates fear, drives people into the shadows, and erodes the trust necessary for real community safety.

We call on Mayor Whitmire and City Council to take immediate, transparent steps to end ICE collaboration and to protect all Houstonians, regardless of immigration status.

  • Statement on Proposed SBISD Boundary Changes

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

    November 12, 2025

    Somos Spring Branch Calls for Equity and Transparency in SBISD’s Proposed Boundary Changes

    Somos Spring Branch appreciates the district’s stated goal of balancing enrollment; however, the organization has deep concerns about how these boundary changes are being developed and the potential impacts on equity and student success.

    “Our community has seen what happens when boundaries shift without adequate support,” said David Lopez, Director of Somos Spring Branch. “When Spring Shadows Elementary closed abruptly and students were reassigned to Buffalo Creek, the district did not provide the resources necessary for a smooth transition, and Buffalo Creek’s Student Achievement rating fell from a C to an F within a year. This history demonstrates that rezoning decisions can have serious consequences when not accompanied by sufficient planning, staffing, and investment.”

    Somos Spring Branch is also concerned that the communities most affected, particularly families on the north side of Spring Branch where Latino and working-class students are the majority, have not had meaningful representation or voice in the process. Boundary decisions made without inclusive engagement risk deepening existing inequities and eroding trust.

    The organization urges the district to:

    1. Publish clear pre- and post-boundary demographic and resource data for every affected school.

    2. Commit to equitable staffing and funding where student populations increase.

    3. Create structured opportunities for north-side families to participate in ongoing boundary and facilities planning.

    “Until the district demonstrates a transparent process and equitable implementation plan, Somos Spring Branch cannot support these proposed boundary changes,” Lopez added.

  • SBISD Election Results Highlight Need for Change: Northside Votes Show Support for True Representation

    The SBISD School Board election results are in, and while our endorsed candidates—Diana Martinez Alexander, David Lopez, and Patricia Cabrera—did not win the at-large race, their victory in the northside vote speaks volumes.

  • Justice for Spring Branch: Court Sides with Community in Voting Rights Case

    For far too long, families and students in Spring Branch ISD’s north side communities have watched decisions being made without their voices in the room. Today’s ruling marks a turning point—a long overdue recognition that representation matters, and every child, regardless of where they live, deserves to be seen, heard, and valued.

    This decision affirms that the at-large system has denied equitable access to governance and silenced the communities that make this district rich in culture, language, and strength. Moving to a single-member district model is not just a procedural change—it is a symbol of justice, and a promise that moving forward, leadership will better reflect the people it serves.

    This victory belongs to every parent, student, and neighbor who spoke up, organized, and believed that change was possible. Today, the voices that were once overlooked are finally at the center of the conversation.
