The SBISD School Board election results are in, and while our endorsed candidates, Diana Martinez Alexander, David Lopez, and Patricia Cabrera, did not win the at-large race, their victory in the northside vote speaks volumes.
They won the majority of votes at Landrum, Northbrook, Spring Woods, and Spring Oaks Middle Schools, which are the heart of our district’s Latine community. This is a powerful message: when our community has a voice, it rallies behind leaders who genuinely reflect its values and needs.
For years, Latine voters have been marginalized by an at-large election system that diminishes their collective power. In fact, in over a decade of SBISD elections, the Latino-preferred candidate has never won. The Elizondo v. SBISD lawsuit calls this what it is: voter dilution. And once again, the pattern continues.
Our students, families, and neighborhoods, especially on the northside, deserve better. The 2023 TEA report clearly shows that northside students are consistently underperforming, yet year after year, their needs go unmet. The district only seems to notice them when it's time to make budget cuts.
Last year’s budget decisions made it painfully clear: with a board dominated by southside representation, it was northside schools and programs that were slashed. Now, with the passage of Proposition C, the natatorium is being moved from the northside to the southside. Once again, our students lose out.
Diana, David, and Patricia ran to stop these inequities. They ran to put an end to one-sided decisions that harm our community. They ran to ensure every child, regardless of ZIP code, receives the resources and respect they deserve.
Now, with Governor Abbott’s school voucher scheme signed into law, SBISD faces more student losses and even more cuts. We already know where this board turns when it needs to "save money": the northside.
We will not be silent. We will show up. We will speak out. We will hold this board accountable for every decision that continues to leave our children behind. Join us at every board meeting. Stay informed with our community updates. Stand with our students. Because the fight for equity in Spring Branch is far from over.
