Somos Spring Branch Calls for Equity and Transparency in SBISD’s Proposed Boundary Changes
Somos Spring Branch appreciates the district’s stated goal of balancing enrollment; however, the organization has deep concerns about how these boundary changes are being developed and the potential impacts on equity and student success.
“Our community has seen what happens when boundaries shift without adequate support,” said David Lopez, Director of Somos Spring Branch. “When Spring Shadows Elementary closed abruptly and students were reassigned to Buffalo Creek, the district did not provide the resources necessary for a smooth transition, and Buffalo Creek’s Student Achievement rating fell from a C to an F within a year. This history demonstrates that rezoning decisions can have serious consequences when not accompanied by sufficient planning, staffing, and investment.”
Somos Spring Branch is also concerned that the communities most affected, particularly families on the north side of Spring Branch where Latino and working-class students are the majority, have not had meaningful representation or voice in the process. Boundary decisions made without inclusive engagement risk deepening existing inequities and eroding trust.
The organization urges the district to:
-
Publish clear pre- and post-boundary demographic and resource data for every affected school.
-
Commit to equitable staffing and funding where student populations increase.
-
Create structured opportunities for north-side families to participate in ongoing boundary and facilities planning.
“Until the district demonstrates a transparent process and equitable implementation plan, Somos Spring Branch cannot support these proposed boundary changes,” Lopez added.
